1. Muffin

The first breakfast food that starts with the letter ‘M’ is a muffin.

Although the origin is uncertain, the word ‘moofin’ was found in print in 1773. Muffins are a type of baked food that comes in many flavors and sizes.

Generally, muffins are made with enriched dough, which gives them their signature moist texture and coarse-grained flavor. 

Muffins are available in savory or sweet flavors, such as cornmeal and cheese muffins or blueberry chocolate chip, lemon banana, respectively.

2. McGriddles

The second breakfast food on our list is McGriddles. Tom Ryan, the founder of Smashburger, is also the creator of McGriddles.

McGriddles is a breakfast sandwich marketed and sold at McDonald’s.

Launched in 2003, it was initially available in some selected international markets only; however, it was discontinued during the pandemic in 2020. The good news is that it is back in a few markets now.

It contains scrambled egg flaps, fried bacon, and American cheese between two maple-flavored griddle pancakes with the McDonald’s logo.  

3. McMuffin

The McMuffin is another breakfast sandwich sold by the famous fast-food brand Mcdonald’s.

The Egg McMuffin is a famous sandwich invented in 1972 by Herb Peterson to resemble eggs Benedict, an English muffin breakfast dish.

The ingredients that go into this renowned breakfast sandwich include English muffins, American cheese, and eggs butter with Canadian bacon.

McMuffin was the first internationally available fast food in the 1970s.

4. Milk

The next breakfast food item that begins with the letter M is milk.

European farmers are believed to have discovered the milk we drink so fondly today. 

Historically speaking, humans learned to consume the milk of other mammals regularly after domestication began during the Neolithic Age.

This white liquid food is packed with nutrients and protein, which helps one feel fuller longer, thus making it a perfect breakfast food.

Milk is now generally packaged in biodegradable plastic bottles.

5. Milk Toast

The true origins of milk toast are unknown, but this dish has been around since the late 19th century and was most popular in New England.

Milk toast includes toasted bread in warm milk, mostly with sugar and butter. Pepper, salt, paprika, cocoa, paprika, raisins, and some more ingredients can also be added. 

Fun fact: The milquetoast was a comic book character created by H.T Webster for The New York World in 1924.

6. Monkey Bread

Another breakfast food that starts with the letter M is monkey bread.

Monkey bread has other names such as bubble bread, plucking cake, and pull-apart bread. 

The Hungarians are known for their delicious desserts, and one of them is called arany galuska or Hungarian coffee cake.

This dessert was first introduced into America by Hungarian immigrants who brought it with them when they immigrated during the late 1800s 

Monkey Bread is a sweet, soft, and sticky treat you can enjoy for breakfast or an occasional snack. It is made with soft, doughy bread pieces covered in cinnamon sugar.

7. Mocha

It’s hard to imagine breakfast without coffee which is why Mocha is our next breakfast food that begins with the letter M.

Mocha was born in Mocha, Yemen, one of the prime centers of the early coffee trade.

The place produced a special kind of coffee bean that tasted like coffee, that’s how the name.

The caffè mocha is a chocolate-flavored drink similar to the coffee version known as “cafe latte.” It typically comes in glasses rather than cups and can be enjoyed hot or cold.

If you order mocha in Italy, you will get a glass of hot chocolate milk. 

8. Mohinga

Many consider mohinga the national dish of Myanmar.

Mohinga is a Burmese soup that has rice noodles and fish in it. It is an interesting, light-weighted version of ramen but spicier than your average noodle dish and has a sour taste that gives it some kick. 

The recipe has several variations across the country; however, the south still keeps the authentic flavor.

9. Maypo

The Maltex Corporation developed the original Maypo in Burlington, Vermont. Heublein Incorporated purchased them shortly afterward and took their flavor complex to another level with added fruit flavors. 

The original commercial aired during the 1950s, and it has since become an American favorite with its simple yet catchy tune about wanting just one sip from Uncle Ralph’s cup.

Maypo is still manufactured at the same place, i.e., Pennysylvania’s Highspire.

10. Mas Huni

Mas Huni is native to the Maldives.

The typical breakfast food consists of finely chopped onion, tuna, hot chili peppers, and coconut mixed with grated meat of the coconut.

It is then eaten with freshly baked roshi flatbread and sweetened hot tea. 

While traditionally, it had collard leaves, it has many variants now. One of them has muranga pods in it, replacing leaves. Pumpkin and butternut variants are also available.

11. Mandoca

Mandoca is made from corn flour, panela (condensed milk), plantain, and grated cheese. Then this fried cornmeal dish can be served with butter, cheese, or yogurt.

Mandoca is a Venezuelan dish that originated in the Zulia region. It is one of the many varieties from the western Zulia region.

It tastes great when eaten hot.

12. Malasadas

Malasada consists of yeast-risen flat circles coated in sugar and cinnamon, with just enough lemon zest to give it it’s character.

They are a type of Portuguese sweet bread that was first created on the island of São Miguel, over 1500 years ago. The name means “poorly cooked” because it has an almost crisp, sugary exterior contrasted with soft doughy crumbs.

13. Manakish

Manakish has been a popular dish in the Levantine region since the 10th century and is made from dough covered with thyme, cheese, or meat ingredients like ground meat. 

The first bread was made by people thousands of years ago in Phoenicia, and it came from wheat dough with female hands working on it to bake in communal ovens. 

Manakish is older than pizza and may have inspired the Roman flatbread with toppings.

14. Matzah Brei

Matzai brie is prepared with some basic ingredients such as eggs, matzah, and a softening liquid for the matzah, such as milk or hot water.

Matzah brei is a dish of Ashkenazi Jewish origin. It’s commonly eaten during Passover and other holidays, usually for breakfast, because it fills you up faster than other foods do.

15. Muesli

The last breakfast food that starts with the letter M is Muesli.

Swiss doctor Maximilian Bircher-Benner created it at his clinic. He called it “the apple diet food” or Apfeldiätspeise from an old German word for “puree”. But was later named Muesli.

Muesli is made from rolled oats and fresh or dried fruits. You can serve it with milk, honey (or maple syrup), butter, and almond nuts for added flavor.
